Which month is best for whale watching in Vancouver?

🌸 In the springtime, we commonly find Bigg’s killer whales throughout the Salish Sea. Humpback whales are still returning from their migration in the early spring, so the density of humpback whales is not at its height this time of the year. That being said, we still frequently come across humpback whales in the months of April - June, and sometimes we’re lucky enough to see both humpback whales and killer whales in the same trip early in the season. We even find grey whales in the spring!

☀️ During the hot months of July and August, we frequently find humpback whales. By now they have all returned from their migration, and they are hungry after such a long journey. By the end of August, the humpbacks become more active and energetic as they’ve spent a few months bulking up on krill in the nutrient-rich waters. We still find killer whales this time of year as well, but many pods travel further north to hunt seals during this time period.

🍂 Many of our naturalists say that September and October are their favorite months for whale watching. The humpback whales are active and social as they prepare for their migration in the coming months, and the Bigg’s killer whales have returned from their seal hunts. This past season, we even had rare visits from the Northern resident killer whales in September. The cool autumn air, unique sightings, and beautiful scenery can’t be beat.

🐋 Whichever month you decide to join us, we guarantee you’ll have a whale of a time!
