Rainy Killer Whale Days

Don't let rainy days stop you from whale watching! On June 19th, 2023, our passengers were lucky enough to find the T046B matriline in a happy mood. Grey and drizzly skies might dissuade some people from joining us on the boat, but the rain won't stop the killer whales from breaching. Fresh off a successful hunt with full bellies, this pod of orcas celebrated by breaching, spy-hopping, and tail-slapping for at least thirty minutes off the coast of Salt Spring Island.

The T46B matriline is a family full of girls. The matriarch, Raksha (T046B), was born in 1988, and has raised five daughters and two grandchildren. From oldest to youngest, her daughters are Tread (T046B1) born in 1998, Akela (T046B2) born in 2008, Sedna (T046B3) born in 2011, Quiver (T046B4) born in 2013, and Sol (T046B6) born in 2019. You can also find Tread's children in the pod, Tsakani (T046B1A) born in 2015, and Tl'uk (T046B1B) born in 2018.

They have a reputation for being active and rambunctious, and they did not disappoint!

Thanks to all who joined Captain Lloyd and Naturalist Jade. Some photos/videos were taken using a Canon camera with a telescopic lens and cropping.
