January 3rd on the Salish Sea: A Winter Eco Tour to Remember ❄️🌊

A Remarkable Winter Wildlife Gathering

Not long into the trip, we were greeted by an unforgettable scene. Hundreds of Steller sea lions were hauled out together, with California sea lions mixed among them, creating a bustling winter haul-out. Surrounding the area were cormorants, perched and diving nearby, all sharing the same productive marine space.

Scenes like this offer a powerful insight into the winter ecosystem of the Salish Sea. While some species migrate, many others rely on these waters year-round. Winter brings different behaviours, different groupings, and different energy — but the richness of life remains.

Why Winter Matters on the Coast

Winter is often thought of as an off-season, but on the Salish Sea it is anything but quiet. Fewer boats, shifting food sources, and seasonal movements create unique opportunities to observe wildlife in ways that summer doesn’t always allow.

Sea lions gather in large numbers, seabirds take advantage of nutrient-rich waters, and coastal ecosystems continue their steady rhythm. Winter tours provide space to slow down, observe closely, and appreciate how interconnected these species are.

Experiencing the Salish Sea in a Different Season

Our Winter Eco Tours are designed to showcase this side of the coast — comfortable, educational, and focused on respectful wildlife viewing. Each trip is different, shaped by weather, tides, and the animals themselves, but every tour offers a deeper understanding of how vibrant the Salish Sea remains throughout the year.

January 3rd was a perfect example: a calm winter day, remarkable wildlife encounters, and a reminder that the ocean’s story continues long after summer ends.

❄️✨ Join us on a Winter Eco Tour and experience the Salish Sea in a whole new season.
