Bigg's Killer Whale doing a head stand

Breaches, tail slaps and head stands

On May 12th, we had the incredible fortune of encountering T124A1 “Bonaparte” and her family off the coast of Thetis Island. The whales were highly active, treating us to a stunning display of surface behaviors as they appeared to be socializing and possibly hunting.

Our guests were thrilled to witness breaches, spy hops, tail slaps, and headstands—all fascinating social behaviors that orcas use to communicate and interact with each other. At times, it also seemed like they might have been hunting, although we couldn’t confirm that for certain.

Either way, it was an unforgettable experience. We had an absolute blast—and it sure looked like the orcas did too.
