If you've never been whale watching before, you might be wondering what the experience is actually like.
Will you spend hours searching for whales? What should you bring? Will someone explain what you're seeing? And what happens if wildlife appears?
Whether you're visiting Vancouver for the first time or planning a local adventure, here's exactly what you can expect on a Seabreeze Adventures whale watching tour.
1. Getting Here
Your adventure begins in the historic fishing village of Steveston, just 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver.
If you're staying in Vancouver or Richmond, getting here is easy. We offer an optional shuttle service from Downtown Vancouver and select Richmond hotels, which can be added during booking or by calling our office in advance.
Before departure, our friendly team will check you in, answer any last-minute questions, and make sure you're ready for an unforgettable day on the Salish Sea.
If you arrive a little early, take some time to explore Steveston's waterfront, grab a coffee, or watch the fishing boats before boarding.

2. What Should You Bring?
Being comfortable on the water makes all the difference.
We recommend bringing:
✔ Layers (the weather can change throughout the day)
✔ Sunglasses
✔ Sunscreen
✔ Comfortable closed-toe shoes
✔ A fully charged camera with plenty of battery and a memory card
✔ A fully charged phone for photos and videos
✔ A reusable water bottle
✔ Snacks to enjoy during the trip
If you'd prefer not to pack lunch, bagged lunches are also available and can be added during booking or by calling our office in advance.
3. Meet Your Crew
Before leaving the dock, you'll meet your experienced captain and knowledgeable naturalists.
We'll begin with a short safety briefing so everyone feels comfortable on board, covering:
- Safety around the vessel
- What to expect during the tour
- Responsible wildlife viewing guidelines
- How we help protect the incredible animals we encounter
Then it's time to head out onto the Salish Sea.

4. Leaving Steveston
As the harbour disappears behind us, you'll quickly find yourself surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery.
The journey itself is part of the adventure.
Even before we start looking for whales, we often spot:
- Harbour seals
- Bald eagles
- Great blue herons
- Steller sea lions
- Harbour porpoises
- Cormorants and other seabirds
Every trip begins with something to discover.

5. The Wildlife Search Begins
One of our favourite parts of every tour is that everyone gets involved.
Whale watching isn't just about sitting back and waiting—we like to treat it as a team activity.
If it's your first time whale watching, don't worry. Our naturalists will teach you exactly what to look for, including:
🐋 Whale blows on the horizon
🦅 Feeding birds that can indicate activity below the surface
🌊 Dorsal fins breaking the water
🐬 Other signs of marine life
With dozens of eyes scanning the Salish Sea together, it becomes a fun and exciting shared experience. There's nothing quite like hearing someone call out, "Blow at two o'clock!" and watching the whole boat come alive.

6. Learn About the Wildlife
Finding wildlife is only part of the experience.
Throughout the tour, our naturalists share fascinating stories about the animals and ecosystem around you.
Depending on what we encounter, you might learn:
- Why humpback whales breach or tail lob
- How to identify individual Bigg's killer whales
- Why harbour seals float in their famous "banana pose"
- How bald eagles hunt fish
- What makes the Salish Sea one of North America's richest marine ecosystems
Every day on the water is different, which means every tour offers something new to discover.
7. Capture Incredible Memories
Whether you're using a smartphone or professional camera, there are plenty of opportunities to capture incredible moments.
Our naturalists are always happy to share photography tips to help you make the most of your time on the water.
Remember, the best wildlife photographs don't come from being closest, they come from patience, good timing, and respecting wildlife by giving animals the space they deserve.

8. Returning to Harbour
As you make your way back to Steveston, you'll likely find yourself scrolling through your camera roll, reliving your favourite moments from the day.
Maybe it was your first whale.
Maybe it was a curious harbour seal.
Maybe it was watching a bald eagle swoop down to catch a fish.
Whatever your highlight, you'll leave with a deeper appreciation for the incredible wildlife and ecosystems of the Salish Sea, and more than a few stories you'll be telling for years to come.
