April 23rd on the Salish Sea: Rhinoceros Auklets, Bonaparte’s Gulls, and the 124Ds

On our April 23rd whale watching trip, we left Steveston and were met by some choppy waves, a crowd of sea lions sleeping on the jetty, and hundreds of cormorants. There were no nearby reports of whales in the area, which meant we had to set out and find them! Captain Dan decided to take us south towards Active Pass.

Captain’s Log A Stormy Day and a Rare Vocal Encounter

A stormy day on the Salish Sea brought an unforgettable encounter with Bigg’s killer whale T101A, seen socializing with the well-known T87 "Harbeson." While the rest of the T100s travelled through Burrard Inlet, these two males lingered—and even vocalized—offering a rare and moving moment for all on board.
