Things To Do In Vancouver With Kids

There’s always something to do in the city, but summer is a fantastic time to visit Vancouver! There are so many outdoor activities to keep the kids busy.

To start, there’s Stanley park, located downtown in the west end. Stanley park has a fabulous pitch’n putt course, a huge outdoor pool at Second Beach that’s open to the public in the summer, a world class aquarium, hiking trails winding through it, a beautiful rose and rhododendron garden, an amazing sea-wall to walk, bike or rollerblade around! Don’t feel like walking around Stanley park? – see it in style on a horse drawn carriage ride, the kids will never forget that. You can easily spend a whole day or two or three, having fun at Stanley park. If you’re lucky, maybe you can catch the international fireworks competition at English Bay. The fireworks competition is usually the last weekend of July and ends the first weekend of August. The Vancouver Pride Parade happens the next afternoon, after the last night of fireworks.

Need more ideas? Playland is a great place to spend a summer day or night for kids who love rides and games. There’s tons of rides, games and food to eat there. Go swimming at the Kits Beach outdoor pool, shop and play at the Granville Island Kids Market, smell the flowers at Vandusen Gardens and Queen Elizabeth Park. Head to the North Shore and walk 230 feet  above the Capilano river at the Capilano Suspension bridge.

It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, everyone can enjoy these activities together. What to do in the evening? After all the excitement of the day, clean up, have a power nap, and change into your best outfit and enjoy dinner at one of the numerous fine dining restaurants Vancouver has to offer.

If you have seen everything Vancouver has to offer and need a fresh place to conquer – take a short trip to Steveston, located in Richmond. It’s a quick 20 minute drive from Vancouver. No car? Hop on the skytrain or take transit, its super easy and it can be a fun adventure for the kids to ride on the bus or skytrain. Steveston is the perfect day trip destination with kids in tow. Its a beautiful and historic seaside village. Occasionally tall ships glide into port here – watch out for pirates matey!

When you’re in Steveston, take a nice walk or bike ride along the dyke to Garry Point park. If you need to cool off, walk down to Moncton street to check out the cute shops and pick up some ice cream or a coffee treat from one of the many cafes and restaurants. Steveston is famous for its fresh fish and chips, so make sure you’re hungry when you visit!

The TV series, Once Upon A Time was filmed in Steveston. Fans of the show will feel the magic left behind in the streets – it will feel like a living fairy tale when the kids walk past the same buildings that the show featured!

Try to catch the Canada Day parade in Steveston every July 1. Or check out the Sockeye Run Show’n Shine that the Richmond Lions club puts on every year (check their site for dates). These are family friendly events sure to please the youngsters in your life. Every second week in the summer there is a fantastic farmers market  beside the cannery. Take your time meandering through the open air market, shop for fresh vegetables, home made baking, hand crafted jewelry and say hello to the many original vendors there.

Since you’re in Steveston, don’t forget to check out Fisherman’s Wharf and the Britannia Shipyard. Strolling down the boardwalk is like walking back in time. Not only are these fun activities, they are historic sites. Your imagination will run wild thinking about the past, when you walk through the historic shipyard and waterfront park.

Looking for more of an adventure? Charter a boat to go fishing for a few hours and foster a positive hobby the kids will enjoy for a lifetime. Fishing doesn’t excite you? Then here’s the biggest adventure ever – whale watching! This is the perfect kid friendly activity. You start with an exciting boat ride, learn about the whale’s natural habitat and hopefully see a pod of orcas splashing around! That’s a memory that kids with have forever, seeing their first killer whale in the wild! You’ll be a hero for sure!
